In 1891 a Black itinerant preacher named John Harrison disappeared and was presumed murdered in my hometown of Norwich, VT. In 1939 Paul Sample, a white WPA illustrator and painter made a painting of the Beaver Meadow Chapel in West Norwich. This is a piece of the local landscape I am intimately familiar with painted in warm tones and depicting an idyllic rural Vermont scene. Just out of the frame to the left is where John Harrison lived and where he was last seen alive.
